Reiki vs. Crystal Healing: What Is the Difference and Which Is Right for You?
If you are new to energy healing, the world of modalities can feel both beautiful and a little overwhelming. Reiki and crystal healing are two of the most widely known and deeply effective forms of energy work available. Both work with the body's energetic field. Both can bring profound relief, clarity, and healing. But they do it in distinct ways, and understanding the difference can help you choose the experience that feels right for you, or discover why combining both might be even more powerful.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese healing practice that works with universal life force energy, channeled through the practitioner's hands and directed to the client's body and energy field. The word itself translates to universal life energy. Reiki is not something the practitioner generates from their own reserves. It is universal energy that flows through the practitioner as a clear, attuned channel.
As a Reiki Master Teacher holding lineages in Usui, Karuna Ki, and Sekhmet Reiki, I work with a rich and layered current of energy in every session. Each lineage carries its own quality and frequency. Usui Reiki is the foundational, gentle current most people are familiar with. Karuna Ki brings a deep compassion and emotional healing quality. Sekhmet Reiki draws on ancient Egyptian energy and works with great power and clarity.
During a Reiki session, you lie fully clothed while I place my hands lightly on or above different areas of the body. The energy naturally goes where it is needed. Clients often feel warmth, tingling, waves of release, or a deep settling peace. Sessions work on the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies simultaneously.
What is crystal healing?
Crystal healing works with the natural energetic properties of crystals and gemstones to shift, clear, and rebalance the body's energy field. Each crystal carries a unique vibrational frequency, shaped by its mineral composition, color, structure, and the conditions under which it formed. These frequencies interact with the human energy field in specific and often remarkable ways.
I was personally trained in crystal healing by Philip Permutt, one of the world's most respected crystal experts and authors. This training gave me a deep, nuanced understanding of how to work with crystals not just intuitively, but with precision and intention. In a crystal healing session, I select and place crystals on and around the body based on what your energy field needs in that moment. Crystals may be placed on chakra points, along energetic lines, or in specific configurations that create a healing field around you.
Before each session, every crystal is cleansed and charged with tingshas, smoke, breath, and intention. The healing that unfolds is tailored entirely to you, because no two people arrive with the same energetic landscape.
How are they different?
The most meaningful difference is in how the healing energy is delivered. Reiki flows through the practitioner. Crystal healing works through the stones themselves, with the practitioner directing the placement and intention.
Reiki tends to feel fluid, warm, and all-encompassing. It moves through the body like a gentle tide, responding to what is needed. Crystal healing often feels more localized and specific. Clients describe the sensation of crystals as a kind of gentle pulling or drawing out, a targeted clearing or filling in a particular area.
Reiki sessions tend to be more passive. Crystal healing can feel more active in the body, particularly when stones with strong energetic properties are used. Both can bring emotional release, physical relief, and a profound sense of peace.
Which one is right for you?
If you are drawn to Reiki, you may be craving a gentle, full-body clearing. Reiki is beautiful for emotional processing, stress relief, grief, fatigue, and general energetic maintenance. It is also deeply supportive during times of transition or uncertainty.
If you feel called to crystal healing, you may be working through something more specific. People often feel drawn to crystals when they are clearing old patterns, working with their chakras, or looking for a deeper physical or emotional release.
And if you are not sure, trust that. Your intuition is already pointing toward what your body needs. I also combine both modalities when the session calls for it, weaving Reiki and crystal healing together in a way that is uniquely tailored to what your energy field is asking for that day.
Whichever path you feel drawn to, you are welcome here. I would be honored to support your healing.
