How Does Reiki Energy Healing Actually Work?
Reiki is one of the most gentle yet powerful forms of energy healing available today. But if you have never experienced it, you might be wondering: how does energy healing actually work? Is it real? And what does it feel like? These are fair questions, and they deserve honest, grounded answers.
The basics of Reiki
Reiki is a Japanese healing technique that channels universal life force energy through the practitioner's hands to the recipient. The word Reiki itself comes from two Japanese words: "rei" meaning universal or spiritual, and "ki" meaning life force energy. This is the same energy that flows through all living things.
During a Reiki session, the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body. The energy flows to wherever it is needed most, clearing blockages, releasing tension, and restoring the body's natural state of balance. The practitioner does not direct the energy with their own will. Instead, they serve as a channel, allowing the energy to flow where it is needed.
What does Reiki feel like?
Everyone experiences Reiki differently, and that is part of its beauty. Common sensations include warmth or heat from the practitioner's hands, tingling or gentle pulsing, waves of deep relaxation, emotional release (tears, laughter, or a sense of relief), and a feeling of being held or supported by something larger than yourself.
Some people see colors behind their closed eyes. Others receive images, memories, or intuitive impressions. Many simply fall into a deeply peaceful state that feels like the most restful meditation they have ever experienced. There is no wrong way to receive Reiki.
The science and the mystery
While modern science is still exploring the mechanisms behind energy healing, research has shown that Reiki can reduce stress, lower heart rate, decrease pain perception, and promote relaxation. Many hospitals and medical centers now offer Reiki as a complementary therapy alongside conventional treatment.
From a spiritual perspective, Reiki works because everything is energy. When your energy field becomes blocked, stagnant, or depleted, whether from stress, trauma, illness, or emotional pain, it affects your entire being. Reiki restores the natural flow, allowing your body, mind, and spirit to return to their innate state of harmony.
Multiple lineages, deeper healing
Not all Reiki is the same. As a Reiki Master Teacher attuned to Usui, Karuna Ki, and Sekhmet lineages, I bring a rare depth and diversity of training to every session. Usui Reiki is the original Japanese lineage. Karuna Ki works with higher-frequency energies for deep emotional and karmic healing. Sekhmet Reiki brings a powerful, spiritually guided energy of purification and divine love.
I weave all three lineages together intuitively, creating a unified practice that draws from a vast well of healing energy. This means every session is tailored to exactly what your body, mind, and spirit need in that moment.
Reiki is for everyone
You do not need to be spiritual, religious, or experienced with energy work to benefit from Reiki. It meets you exactly where you are. Whether you are seeking physical relief, emotional healing, spiritual connection, or simply a deep sense of peace, Reiki has something to offer.
I offer Reiki sessions in person in Lexington, SC and long-distance Reiki for clients anywhere in the world. If you have been curious about energy healing, this is a gentle and powerful place to begin.
